What is WebP?
WebP is an image file format that offers both lossy and lossless (reversible) compression. It is derived from the VP8 image encoding format and is considered a sister project to the WebM multimedia format. It was developed by Google after acquiring On2 Technologies. It is released under the terms of the BSD license.
The maximum number of pixels supported by WebP is 16383x16383. Lossy WebP only supports the 8-bit YUV 4:2:0 format. Lossless (reversible) WebP supports the VP8L encoding and 8-bit ARGB color space. Both lossy and lossless compression support an alpha transparency channel, ICC color profiles, and XMP interpretation data.
WebP has static and dynamic modes. Dynamic WebP (animated WebP) supports lossy and lossless compression, ICC color profiles, XMP interpretation data, and an alpha transparency channel.
What are the advantages of WebP over PNG and JPG?
WebP's advantage is its better image data compression algorithm, which can result in smaller image sizes with the same visual quality; it also has lossless and lossy compression modes, alpha transparency, and animation capabilities, with excellent, stable, and consistent conversion effects on both JPEG and PNG.
When WebP compresses a JPG to 90% of its original quality, the image size is reduced by about 50%. When WebP compresses a JPG to 80% of its original quality, the image size is reduced by 60% to 80%.
Compared to JPG, the superior compression performance of lossless WebP is mainly due to its advanced predictive coding technology and macroblock adaptive quantization, which improve compression efficiency, while Boolean arithmetic coding provides a 5% to 10% improvement in compression performance over Huffman coding.
According to Google's early tests, WebP's lossless compression reduced file sizes by 45% compared to PNG files found on the web, and even after these PNG files were processed with PNGCRUSH and PNGOUT, WebP could still reduce file sizes by 28%. Currently, WebP can reduce image size by an average of 70%. WebP is the future trend for image formats.
